An arbor according to Orvis it is the “center part of the spool, where fly line and backing are tied, wound, and connected to the reel.” Recently, the design of the fly reel has undergone some changes and one if it is the size of the arbor. A large arbor reel affords you the ability to have more line backing so that a fish can run further with getting spooled. A large arbor design also aids in the retrieval of fish because a larger arbor can retrieve line quicker.
