Douglaston Salmon Run Daily Fishing Report

initial fishing report 12 Sep 17
9/12/2017

CFS 500 / 603 – as of last night, while I was fishing the estuary, the water was steadily clearing up – temperature will be in low 70s today, light and variable winds, partly cloudy – first reports this morning, from the estuary, indicated a very good push of fish, mixed Kings and Cohos, into the “S” curves – the very upper section of the DSR (Coho Hole) reported no noticeable fish movement, below the Black Hole reported “multiple hook-ups”, the middle of the run reporting clients hoking up – tackle / technique tip: for those of you who want a change of pace, try spoons and plugs, for some smashing strikes, and try fishing the estuary where the fish have the chance to fight the good fight – 3/4 ounce Little Cleos in silver/blue, fire tiger, or gold all work – cast out quartering downriver, count down a bit, then slow roll the spoon back in – set a light drag, as the salmon will frequently grab the spoon near the end of the retrieve, and keep a bend in the rod or the line or rod will break from the strike and initial run – fish Flatfish and Kwikfish – from 2 1/2″ to 4″ sizes work very well – my favorite is chrome with florescent pink spots – or chrome and chartreuse, yellow with black and red spots – let these hang in the current, or cast downriver, let the current take it down a bit, then slowly reel it back in – it is exciting to see a huge salmon materialize out of the depths, mouth gaping, smash the lure, then turn around in its own length – fish on!
