Eyes on the River

October 6, 2016 by Salmon River Newbie Leave a Comment

There are fishing reports from the Douglaston Salmon Run this morning that a large pod of salmon were moving thru. I fished the Lower Staircase up to the Long Bridge in the morning. Right at daybreak there was some salmon moving but it was not like last week. Around 9 AM it started getting really bright and salmon began to hide. Fishing conditions were less than ideal due to the crowds. I hooked up 3 times and 3 times I had to do contortions to get around other fishermen. There were lots of new fishermen and looked like many did not understand river etiquette. One fisherman thinking he was helping tried to net my fish. I appreciate the gesture but as they tried to net the fish the net broke the line. Yelling “fish on”, “going up”, “coming down” fell on deaf ears today and caused me some frustration. However, I’ve been there myself so I totally understand a newbie.

If fishing tomorrow I would suggest fishing from Little Black Hole to 81. The fish that are moving right now in the DSR are going to be moving through these areas tomorrow. Remember as it becomes brighter the fish are going to hide and they will hold in deep pools.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.
