Eyes on the River

October 1, 2016 by Salmon River Newbie Leave a Comment

I spoke to multiple reliable people on Thursday who were on the river and there was in fact the best push of fish in three years. Does that mean that all the fish are in the river now? No there is actually fish still holding outside the river. So although it was a good push that does not mean that they are all in. Does that mean that fish were stacked up like they were in the big 2012 run? No. They were not stacked up. This was a normal incremental push but becuase things have been so bad in the previous years it just looked even bigger. I fished on Friday which as the end of September the lower river was crowded. The previous week it was deserted but this week it was shoulder to shoulder. From Little Black Hole to the Ball Park it was crowded. Unfortunately, with the drought conditions and the low water it made the fishing either really good for those in the funnels or really bad if you were in the wrong place. There was lots of fish movement especially Cohos during the morning hours but around 9 AM Kings stopped moving. Most of the fish moved at sun up and then hit the deep slow pools from 9 AM on. I went up river and everything past Compactor Pool was slow. Drove around and Ellis Cove was crowded but not many fish were being caught. The best fishing was before 81.

When fishing these big and deep holes it’s all about where you are standing that matters. It seems that the head of the deep pool and the beginning of the end of the pool is where the fish are going to be concentrated in. The middle is really not that productive. The trick is off course to be able to find where the beginning and the tail end is.
