Fishing continues to be good. As stated in yesterday’s report the fishing is relatively good during this time in the season. Fish are not stacked but there is enough fish for most anglers to be able to hook up. Right now most fishing will be sight fishing and it requires that you not see how other’s are hooking up but to read water and look for fish. If fish are not visible or you have worked a piece of water and no hookups. You need to move. Remember that fish move and there are times when they stop to rest. The places that the fish rest are good places for you to cast to. If they are resting then the water is going to be a big hole. A big hole requires that you fish it differently than fast water or transition water. In other words how you fish the fast water in the Ball Park is different than how you fish the Sportsman or Trestles. Additionally, the time of day makes a difference.
These things are important to know as you fish for the next few days if there is no big huge push of fish.
Predictions For Columbus Day Weekend.
Currently, people are are talking about a big push for the weekend. By big push, we are talking about a similar event as a few weeks ago with fish just overwhelming the river system.
All Seasons Sports reported on October 2, 2018:
Simple and to the point report.!!
Still waiting on the mother load.! Currently sitting in 8-15 feet of water right in front of the river. The river has lots and lots of fish in it as of right now with the majority of them hanging in the big holes.. Town pool, sportsmans, trestle and schoolhouse are all loaded to the brim with fish. More and steelhead and brown trout are showing up daily, This main October push can happen at any minute of any day.!! We received some decent rain today and forecast calls for some east winds.. I expect it to happen within the next 3-5 days, With things setting up perfect for the long weekend and next weekend..
Douglaston Salmon Run is currently reporting that there are lots of fish building up in the Estuary.
report indicates that there are “lots of fish in both channels” of the estuary
As of this morning according to Douglaston Salmon Run, some fish have moved up but they are moving as smaller pods, not a big push.
Recommendations
So it is possible that we could see a really strong push of fish for this weekend? Not sure but it would be great for anglers. This is one of the busiest weekends of the season.
If the “mother load” does not come in we recommend that you fish a few steps away from the big crowded holes. Most anglers typically look to see which hole has the most people or most hookups and then combat. For some, this can be part of the fishing experience on the Salmon River. However, if you are not in this then walk down the river and look for fish.
Fishing Reports Visually Broken Down
Lake Ontario
Lots of fish in Lake Ontario and pushing into the Estuary. The Estuary is filling up and only a few fish as pods are pushing into the rest of the river. This could set up a big push of fish.
Douglaston Salmon Run
Smaller pods of fish are consinstely pushing into the DSR. Angler reports that I received that fished today say fishing was good. The upper section always fishes well.
Black Hole to 81
There is fish from Staircase to the Ballpark. There is steady movemement through town and fish are being hooked. Look to fish in the morning or late afternoon for best time to fish.
81 To Altmar
Lots of activity from Sportsman to Ellis. Trestle has lots of pressure but anglers continue to hook fish. The Wires also continues to fish well. Remember that some of these spots cover a large area so you have to cast and move. Do not spend your whole day on one rock. I have received conflicting reports from different anglers and when I asked more questions it seemed that the anglers that did well were not fishing in the normal part of the hole. They usually walked a bit down and found unpressured fish. While the ones who did not do well stayed near the main part of the hole.
Oswego Fishing Report
Fishing is really good in Oswego. Fishing pressure has diminished a bit due to the weather but fish continue to come in. The walls are doing well as well as the Dam.
Oak Orchard Fishing Report
More fish by the dam and fish by the Archer’s Club.
Burt Dam Fishing Report
More fish are moving into the creek with more fish being caught by the bridge.
