As summer starts approaching I’m having to come to the conclusion that steelhead season will be over sometime in May and from June to late August will have to look for other fishing opportunities. Due to the fact that I’m really focused on fly fishing I decided to pursue fly fishing in our local streams. The Oriskany Creek, West Canada and the Mohawk River are renowned trout streams and they are very close to my house. My youngest son has expressed interest in fly fishing so decided that is what we will be doing on hot summer days and become better fly fisherman in anticipation of the fall run of salmon on the Salmon River.
Because my fly rod is for a large fish its not really suitable for fishing small streams for smaller trout. I decided that I needed a smaller fly outfit so that we can go after smaller trout. Where as my other fly rod is 8wt for the smaller stream I need a 5 wt and in this circumstance there seemed to be more options in getting a combo. After trying out different combos I settled on the Okuma S-903-5 Cascade Fly Combo (5wt, 9-Feet). This combo was highly rated and after casting it I really liked it. I’m hoping to learn to be a better fly fisherman in a small stream catching brown trout.
