Recap of Weekend Salmon River Fishing Report

August 27, 2018 by Salmon River Newbie Leave a Comment

Wow, this was the weekend that it broke loose on the Salmon River NY. Douglaston Salmon Run reported.

They reported 30 fish going by. I did not get reports like this and if you read this carefully this came from one angler and not river walkers. There is a huge difference between the two. Based on my collection of DSR reports for the last few years I have noticed that they are more conservative when the river walkers or managers report than when quoting an angler. I think the DSR reports are usually accurate when they are reporting from the river walkers. Very important to see the difference when reading fishing reports.

I spoke to multiple sources up and down the river and there was fish that were pushing through in the early hours. As I said it was a Nano Run – there were a few fish consistently moving and they were moving fast. If you were in the right spot where they stopped to rest then you had a chance otherwise you saw them and then they were gone. By the time its 10 AM to about 3 PM EST it was relatively quiet. The sun was high up and fish were hiding in the deep pools or in shallow areas under the cover of trees. The few that stayed and got into position and basically where scraping the bottom of these deep holes were rewarded with fish.

After four o’clock more fish began to move again and there was a flurry of activity down low. Fish were moving fast and if you were in the right place where they took a rest you had a chance. I think it needs to be reiterated that this was not hundreds of fish. I don’t think there was 30 at a time stacking up but I could be wrong there but most of my sources were saying 2 and 3s moving quickly through.

So to recap this is not a huge run or even a small run. This is just a small trickle or nano run which shows signs of what is to come. This is early season and I’m excited because this is my favorite part of the run. This is when the weather is warm and you can wade in shorts. When you hook a fish they are aggressive and you will get more line breaks but if you can bring a fish to hand it is tremendously rewarding.

This is one of the best of the weekend from Chrissy Santos from Instagram check out her page.
