Lately, there have been some predictions on Facebook Salmon River fishing groups.
The first prediction was from former guide George Bahrakis who retired and moved away but is still active on the fishing groups.
His prediction was on July 16, 2018:
OK Here it is…….My Salmon River Prediction…Mid August-/+Third week…. you locals will have a small pod of King Salmon to play with for a few days till they all die (warm water).. Then expect the first fish-able Pod of Kings to enter the river about the second week +/- of September…..The season numbers will be very good for the rest of September through October…Second week in October…GET READY as the Steelhead will begin to enter and Mix with the Salmon..Somewhere In Mid September +/- The Cohos Will Begin to Blast in… REMEMBER YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST
His prediction was eerily accurate of how the Nano Salmon Run took place and the subsequent dry spell that followed.
Shane Muckey who is a fishing lodge owner in Altmar is known for his meticulous fishing season note taking and metereology hobby. He is also an avid angler and is known in the area as a straight shooter. His prediction based on past seasons and the track of Hurrican Florence is putting the season start this week.
Ok I know I got everyone all jazzed up about a possible big run with the east winds last weekend, those winds never materialized, now everyone is going too start getting the cry wolf syndrome with me, but by tomorrow night i’m going too stick my reputation on the line again bigtime and predict a posible big run coming tuesday september 11th… more details tomorrow, let the computer models do another 3-4 runs, make sure the weather coming is reasonably legit… tuesday september 11th, write it down.
Today is September 10 and based on reports from DSR and the weather it may be very close.
