Salmon River Fishing Reports The Great Push of 2018

September 20, 2018 by Salmon River Newbie Leave a Comment

Yesterday, was probably the craziest day I have seen on the river. I remember when I first started fishing the Salmon River. One of the first videos I saw was this video.

Although I’ve seen some good days on the river – yesterday was just incredible. The amount of fish that were on the river pushing up was similar to the video above from a few years back. There were hundreds of fish that were just pushing through.

Fat Nancy’s report says , “lower Salmon river with nonstop action for hours “.

Douglaston Salmon Run’s report said, “Reports from everyone that I spoke with described fish “wall to wall and top to bottom.” Some of our traditional pools had fish in numbers that made them impossible to count.”

I fished from 2 pm to closing at the DSR. From the bottom of the DSR to the top there was fish all over. No matter where I went and no matter where I fished I hooked a fish. One of the things that always bothered me about some anglers is how they would boast that they had a 30-50 day hook up. I fish pretty regularly and I have never seen anyone have a 30-50 day hook up on the river. No disrespect to these individuals but based on what I had seen up till yesterday it was really hard to believe this. However, yesterday between 2 pm and 8 PM I probably hooked up 50 times. Some hookups were foul hooked fish but as much foul hooked fish there was good hookups. There was just so many fish it was incredible.

Unfortunately, I fell pretty hard and my boot was loose so the top of my foot hit the top of my boot tongue. I think it was fractured or badly bruised but fishing was so good that I could not leave. I just ignored the pain and kept fishing. While fishing I felt no pain due to the adrenaline but walking out and up the stairs was pretty terrible. I hobbled to the car and the drive home was painful but not as bad when I had to take off my boot and neoprene socks.

Today, although I was not fishing I received reports from reliable sources that fish are moving through town and the push is like a freight train.

Salmon River Sports Shop reports “WE HAVE KINGS, COHO, STEELHEAD!!!!! PLENTY OF FISH!!!!!!!!!! The whole bottom half of the river has fish all the way to the lake!!!!!! COME ON AND GET ‘EM!!!!”

As I write this most fish are concentrated from 2A down to town. The DSR has lots of fish but not as intense as yesterday. The fish right now are going through should be up higher for the weekend. Probably the weekend the fish will be up by Sportsmans or Trestles.
