Whitakers Daily Report

October 12, 2016 by Salmon River Newbie Leave a Comment

October 12 2016

On Tuesday we started out the morning in the 30’s, but with plenty of sunshine the temperature reached into the 60’s in the afternoon. Yesterday the majority of anglers we spoke with reported getting into fish. The anglers we have staying in the motel who fished the DSR reported getting into mostly kings. Anglers stopping into the shop who fished the mid to upper end of the river reported getting into mostly kings with a few cohos in the mix. With the low water conditions the deeper holes are still holding fish but anglers also reported seeing salmon in and around the gravel areas of the river. The DEC has started the annual egg collection at the NYS Fish Hatchery in Altmar. This week they are collecting eggs from kings and next week they will be collecting eggs from cohos. Several groups who stopped in the shop yesterday said it was well worth checking out if you’ve never seen it before.

We currently have fresh salmon eggs tied up and those anglers fishing with spinning gear. Blue and pink egg sacs has been the most productive.

For those anglers who are fly fishing the natural looking colors such as black, olive or brown have been productive in the low and clear water conditions. Over the past week were seeing more loose salmon eggs in the river and single patterns also been very productive.
